Ruby Slippers

In the movie The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy was able to go home by clicking her heels together three times and repeating the phrase, "There's no place like home." On days like today it is hard not to wish that I was wearing the ruby slippers (The world would run out of rubies if they made them in my size.) so that I might be whisked home to be with my family and enjoy this holiday with them. There have been new additions to the family and everyone seems to be pretty happy with life there. On the other hand, back here in reality, I am thousands of miles away from that. While I don't necessarily want to leave this place, it is a bit harder some days than it is on others and the holidays are usually the hardest days to be here.

It doesn't help that, in China, nobody eats turkey, cranberries, or stuffing, and while I have heard rumors of mashed potatoes, I haven't seen them yet. Oh well, kung-pow chicken is a good turkey substitute. We'll be going up to Lanzhou this weekend to spend the holiday weekend with our friends too. There will be football and a large meal together, so all is not lost.

When you sit down to Thanksgiving dinner today, eat a little extra turkey for me! Take care!

Mr. Ross,
I really hope you have a good thanksgiving. I like this holiday because (well the food, duh) but no I like it because it always makes me think about how much I really do have to be thankful for which is so much. I just think that what you and Mrs. R are doing is so incredible and I'm sure all the little Chinese kids are thankful for you. I just have so much respect for you guys, what you're doing is amazing and it makes me want to be a better person. I hope everything is going well for you and I really really really hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!!!!
Take care, Brigitta

Well, I'm sorry to say I didn't eat any turkey for you, Mr. Ross. But I thought of you. And ate lots of mashed potatoes.

I hope you have a good weekend. Sorry you're homesick, but shipping turkey to China probably wouldn't be a great idea (and I don't think I could touch it long enough to get it into the package anyway).

Sorry Mr. Ross, I've let you down
Seeing as I barely ate enough for myself, but you got an extra slice of apple pie, which was good.
Although I have a funny Thanksgiving story for you.
So my mom bakes an apple pie for the relatives coming over, and she sets it in our garage to cool. Now I've got a weight bench in the garage, low enough to the ground that my elbows touch the floor when I lay on it. The pie is set there. Now somehow over the course of the day, our schnauzer Molly works her way into the garage where, evidently, she found an apple pie right at muzzle level.
Guess which side of the pie my slice came from? And yes, I was blamed initially.

And when you complain about big feet Mr. Ross, please consider what it's like to find pants at 6' 6"

But I feel for ya buddy

Thanks for the kind words. Sounds like Thanksgiving went well for all of you. Ours was pretty good, even if we were away from home. Brigitta, good to hear from you again. Hope your new school is going well.
